Summer is in full swing, and the whole of the UK is weather watching – either it is too hot, or we’re wondering where summer has gone because it is raining again! While there aren’t any bank holidays in July, in between the weather watch and the kids breaking up from school, your customers will want your products, and now is the time to start planning for the second half of the year too.

Everything outdoors

Whether the sun is shining or not, at this time in the year, the outdoors is where most of us want to be, most of the time – so if you don’t have outdoor stuff in your inventory, you’re guaranteed to be missing out on sales. There are limitless numbers of outdoor products that will sell during July and into August, and so by adding more products to your range, you’ll maintain customer interest and keep the orders flowing in.

Garden products

As parents spend more time at home as the summer holidays kick off, they find there’s more items they want for their gardens – whether that’s lounger chairs or other types of patio furniture, as well as planters, garden tools, hosepipes and so on.

While many people will have already planned what they are planting in their garden in July, there are definitely sales to be made in the way of seeds and plants. There are many fruits and vegetables that can be planted in July for crops into the autumn, which makes for a fun activity to keep children interested through the summer (and more likely to eat them too!).

Al fresco dining

There might be annoying bugs around and the threat of a rain shower, but eating al fresco during July and August is a great pleasure – and that’s definitely something you can capitalise on to maximise your sales. Products to add to your inventory include:

  • Outdoor dining furniture
  • Barbecues
  • Wood fired pizza ovens
  • Picnic blankets
  • Cool boxes
  • Eco-friendly food containers
  • Picnic sets

Since the nights start shortening after midsummer in June, there is also likely to be an increase in demand for outdoor lighting, especially solar lights and battery powered models that can light up gardens and evening picnics easily and without increasing electricity bills.

Summer garden fun

Keeping the kids from being attached to their tech all summer means having the right entertainment available in the garden. Add garden toys – especially water-based toys like paddling pools and splash pads, as well as play tents and the usual bats and balls to your inventory now. Having a wide range of toys available for the garden means that parents and grandparents will continue to add to cart throughout the six weeks of summer holidays, to ward off the dreaded cry of “I’m bored”!

Camping

We’ve mentioned this plenty of times on the blog up to this point – and so we won’t go through all the products that you might want to list again. But whether your customers are first time campers who decide to give it a go at the last minute because the weather is great, or they are seasoned campers who just need to replace something, camping products are certain to make you sales through to mid-August at least.

Outdoor activities

As we already spoke about on our products to sell in June post, it is peak season for outdoor activities right now. Water sports like kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding, hiking, fishing, cycling – now is the time, and it will be right through until the end of September, as long as the weather holds! Most of these types of activities are prone to bits and pieces of equipment being lost, so if you haven’t already followed our advice and added these types of products to your inventory, then do so now, so you don’t miss out on customers shopping for replacements.

Summer fashion and accessories

We probably don’t need to tell you too much more about this – when the weather heats up, customers want the right type of fashion items to stay cool, and to show off their tans. Shorts, t-shirts, sarongs, beach cover-ups are all high on the list of priorities, while accessories like hats, caps, sunglasses, bags and so on are too.

Products to stay cool

This category goes without saying – as we’ve already mentioned, complaining about the heat in the summer is a favourite pastime! Sourcing products to stay cool just makes sense throughout July and August, since customers will be looking for them, especially if there is any kind of heatwave.

  • Fans of all descriptions – handheld, desk, rotating, and ceiling styles
  • Cooling towels
  • Cooling sprays
  • Ice trays
  • Ice lolly moulds (especially once the schools break up)
  • Ice cream makers
  • Drinks jugs and dispensers
  • Gazebos and garden shades
  • Splash toys and paddling pools

This isn’t an exhaustive list, and it is well worth doing research to find which products are trending on sales channels and social media – TikTok trends in particular are well worth following, since they tend to create huge demand for products.

Travel products

As the children all break up from school, going on holiday is on the agenda for many families – whether that is in the UK, or abroad. Wherever the destination, customers will be looking for products to help them get through their travels. Back to school

We know – the children only finish their terms towards the end of July! But you can’t have failed to notice the supermarkets starting their back to school promotions before the end of term, and there are plenty of products to source to ensure you’re ahead of the game through August and into the start of September.

  • School uniform items – trousers, shirts, skirts, jumpers in traditional school colours
  • PE kit items – shorts, polo t-shirts, plimsolls
  • Underwear and socks
  • School bags – backpacks, satchels, sports bags
  • Lunchboxes and water bottles

  • Stationery – books, pencils, pens, rulers, maths sets
  • Revision guides

Products that sell well in July are primarily associated with the weather, but now is definitely the time to start thinking ahead for the rest of the year. September will soon be upon us, and thoughts of the new school year mean that getting ahead now is essential.
